Junior quarterback Marvin Washington (2015)
Senior quarterback Marvin Washington threw three touchdown passes, two to junior JeQuan Burton, to lead the Panthers to a 21-6 victory over Jones in the Kickoff Classic. After a scoreless first quarter, Jones struck first on a 52-yard scoring run but came up short on the two-point conversion run. Down 6-0, DP quickly woke up on both sides of the ball. Facing fourth and four at the Jones nine, Washington fired a pass into the end zone to senior Caleb Walls, but the pass was tipped by a defender and juggled three times before Walls corralled it for the go-ahead score in the second quarter. Walls also added a 60-yard kickoff return to his resume earlier in the half.
With a 7-6 lead, the Panthers capitalized on great field position before the half when Washington connected with JeQuan Burton on a 57-yard touchdown pass to take a 14-6 lead into the break. In the third quarter, Washington hit Burton again on a short pass and the junior cut back inside and split the secondary for a 14-yard touchdown with 3:41 left in the third. With a 21-6 lead, the Panthers substituted liberally in the fourth and while the quarter was pockmarked by penalties, DP was able to keep Jones out of the end zone for the final margin. Defensively, junior Tanner Ingle finished with seven tackles, senior Albert Gilreath finished with six stops and junior Joe Gulla picked up a sack. Sterling Stockwell was perfect on all three extra point attempts.
Friday night the Panthers will host Wekiva in the season opener at the Spoone; kickoff is set for 7:00 pm. Annual sports passes are now on sale out of Building 19 and can be purchased via mail utilizing the information posted here: http://dpathletics.ocps.net/announcement_view.asp?nid=172.
