Valdes ties for 10th at State

In his first appearance in the Men's Golf State Championship tournament, Brendan Valdes made quite the impression, firing two-over par 74 on day one and five-over 77 in Saturday's final round to finish tied for tenth in the field of 96 golfers. Valdes came out on fire in Friday's opening round at Mission Inn with birdies on the par five first hole, par four fifth and the par four ninth to head into the turn at two-under par 34. The back nine was tougher on the young freshman, however, especially the par five 14th and par five 17th, but Valdes came into the clubhouse at two-over 74, firmly in the top ten heading into the final round. After a strong front nine a day earlier, Saturday proved more formidable. Valdes slipped to four-over on the day through eight holes but rebounded with a birdie at nine for the second day in a row and followed up with an eagle at the par five tenth to get back to one-over par. The course tightened up down the stretch, though, resulting in bogeys on four of the final eight holes, as Valdes closed out his State Championship with a final round 77 and a two-day total of 151. Valdes finished tied for the lowest score among all freshmen in Class 3A and is one of only three to finish in the top 30. While this year was a tremendous debut for Brendan Valdes, it's merely a glimpse of what's to come over the next three years!
