Senior divers Manny Vazquez and Alex Kaiser at the 2017 State Championship

Vazquez and Kaiser show well at State

Senior divers Manny Vazquez and Alex Kaiser both had a strong showing at the Men's Swimming and Diving State Championship Friday in Stuart with Vazquez earning State Runner-Up honors and Kaiser placing tenth in the field of 24! Vazquez entered as the top seed but on his first dive suffered a shocking fall that forced him to regroup and climb his way back into the fold. After nailing a nearly perfect dive with a high degree of difficulty, Vazquez shot from 24th to sixth place after just three dives. Soon enough, he was back on top after eight dives but after the eventual state champion nailed a difficult dive in round 11, Vazquez came up short of the gold by just six points on his final attempt to claim the silver medal. Vazquez' podium finish is the first for Men's Diving since his coach, Mark Ruiz, won four straight titles from 1994-1997. Alex Kaiser came into the State Championship seeded 13th and had an outstanding meet, finishing in the top ten for the first time in his four-year career. As a freshman he placed 13th, then followed up with a 19th-place finish as a sophomore. The top ten eluded him as a junior when he finished 13th for a second time but as a senior, Kaiser, who is also an integral member of the DP Water Polo team, collected nearly 342 points to push him into the highest finish of his career. Vazquez and Kaiser earned a total of 24 points which placed DP 24th overall as a team.
