Women's Swimming 18th at State

Bolstered by a consolation championship in the 200 freestyle relay, Women's Swimming placed 18th among 39 scoring teams at the 2017 State Championship in Stuart Friday. After placing 12th in the preliminary heat in a season-best 1:40.01, Kayla Smith, Caroline Grzeszczak, Samantha Horency and Roseleen Olivares came back that evening and sliced into that time even further to win the consolation finals in 1:39.69. That victory accounted for nearly half of DP's 39 team points. In the 200 medley relay, Smith, Paola Hernandez, Olivares and Grzeszczak placed tenth with a time of 1:50.22, nearly two seconds faster than their qualifying time at the Regional Championship a week earlier. Individually, junior Kayla Smith came into the 100 backstroke seeded tenth, swam a personal-best 57.58 in the preliminary heat and came back later that evening to place tenth with a time of 57.77, continuing to inch her way towards the school record. Senior Roseleen Olivares closed out her DP career with a personal best time of 57.81 in the 100 fly to place 19th overall. What the team may have lacked in depth they certainly made up for with experience this year. Roseleen Olivares, Caroline Grzeszczak, Paola Hernandez, as well as Bailey Valdes, have been staples in the DP swim program and have been nothing less than exceptional role models for commitment and discipline who will certainly be missed. Best of luck to our seniors and congratulations to all of them for representing our program with class!
