Men's Hoops pulls away from West Orange
11/28/2017 11:39:00 PM

Not only was it opening night for Men's Basketball, it was also opening night for new head coach Dan Batchelor, and after a shaky first half, DP rolled over visiting West Orange to give the team and its coach its first victory. DP trailed 33-32 at the half but in the second half the Panthers poured in 52 points to win going away, 84-61. Sophomore Abdoulaye Thiam and senior Daniel Love opened the third quarter with consecutive threes that triggered a 22-8 run that included 12 of Love's team-high 26 points. Junior Dante Love's block in the lane fed Thiam for three and a jumper in the paint by Juneau Anicette closed out the third with DP up 58-46. In the fourth quarter, Thiam buried one of his five three-pointers and Dante Love drained a pair of threes to give DP a 23-point lead, its largest of the night. DP had five players finish in double figures with Daniel Love (26) Abdoulaye Thiam (21), Juneau Anicette (15), Dante Love (14) and Jordan Poventud (11). On the JV Basketball circuit, Justin Hunter led the way with 16 points but the Panthers couldn't hold off West Orange in a 44-42 season-opening loss. Freshmen Basketball got off to a strong start, leading West Orange by nine after one quarter, but had to hold off a furious comeback before pulling away in the fourth for a 44-33 victory. Ledger Hatch led the Panthers with 13 points while Jadai Smith added ten. All three teams will be in action Friday night at Cypress Creek.
