Women's Soccer defeats Apopka to claim its first Metro West Conference Championship in school history (2018)

Women's Soccer Metro West champs!

Riding a nine-game winning streak to open the season was pressure enough for Women's Soccer but on a cold night in Apopka, the Panthers needed one more victory to claim the program's first Metro West Conference Championship in the program's 31-year history...and they got it. DP scored a pair of goals in the first half and added another in the second for good measure in a 3-1 victory over the host Blue Darters to continue a storybook season that shows no sign of slowing down. In the first half, freshman Jill Ross controlled a corner kick, fed Stephanie Oliveira in the box and the senior captain buried it in the twine for a 1-0 lead in the 25th minute. The Panther defense kept Apopka from getting off a shot but DP doubled their lead minutes later when sophomore Chloe Washington took a beautiful pass from Carmel de Oliveira on the wing and knocked it home for a 2-0 lead. Apopka would respond with a goal off a free kick with roughly ten minutes left in the half, only the second goal scored on the Panthers this season, but DP came out on fire in the second half and put the game away for good. A smothering defense continued to deny Apopka any open looks before Carmel de Oliveira dribbled between two players and the senior captain blasted a shot into the upper 90 from 20 yards out to clinch the title. DP improves to 10-0 on the season and has outscored its opposition 43-2. The JV Panthers played to a scoreless tie at Apopka as their record stands at an undefeated 3-0-3. Both teams will be back on the pitch at Lake Howell Thursday night.
