Women's Basketball pushes West Orange
1/12/2018 9:32:00 AM

Women’s Basketball (8-6) nearly pulled off the upset of the year as they gave visiting West Orange (16-2) everything they could handle in a 70-64 loss to the Warriors. DP built a seven-point lead in the first quarter behind a pair of threes by Samijah Butler and Zoe Alexander but West Orange rallied in the second quarter to close the margin to just two, 38-36 at the half. After West Orange opened the third quarter on a 6-0 run to take a 42-38 lead, Truly Le buried a short jumper and Courtney Afram-Gyening drove the basline and layed it in to tie the game at 44-44. Samijah Butler drained her second three of the night to give DP a 47-44 lead but that was the last lead for the Panthers. West Orange went on a 5-0 run before Zoe Alexander sank a jumper in the lane and then drove in off a crossover to lay it in to cut the margin to 52-51. West Orange responded with an 8-0 run and built as many as a ten-point lead in the fourth before DP made a final push. After four free throws by Butler and Le, Zoe Alexander knocked down a pair of buckets and buried a long three from the top of the key to pull DP within four, 68-64, but that was as close as they’d come. Alexander finished with a game-high 27 points and ten rebounds while Samijah Butler went for 13 points and eight rebounds. Truly Le finished with ten points. Varsity will travel to Gainesville this weekend to take on Tallahassee Rickards tonight at 7:30 and Trenton tomorrow at 3:00 pm. JV Basketball shook off a close game in the first half to pull away comfortably in a 56-37 victory over West Orange. Taina Kong led the Panthers with 19 points and Nisa Costa finished with 12. JV will host University Tuesday night followed by the varsity matchup.
