Men's Wrestling improved to 8-2 on the season after whipping Olympia 54-21 to reclaim the championship belt contested annually by the two rival programs. Seniors Luis ForestalJa'Kiel Etienne and Shaquille Kellymanwere recognized prior to the match and after falling behind by three (15-12), the Panthers stormed back to win five of the last six matches to clinch the victory. Sophomore Ja'Briel Etienne and his older brother Ja'Kiel both registered pins, as did Shaquille Kellyman and Andre Young.. FreshmanChristian Mercado found himself in a war with his opponent at 145 pounds, tied at 7-7 with the clock ticking down in the final period. With one second left, Mercado dug deep and lifted himself up off the mat and spun away for an escape to bring home the 8-7 victory. In the 285-pound match, freshmanKyjuan Phillips was in a similar battle. With the match tied at the end of regulation and both wrestlers clearly exhausted, Phillips found enough energy to dive in for a double leg takedown just seconds into overtime to win 7-5 and cap a phenomenal night for the Panthers. They'll get back on the mat Saturday at the Timber Creek duals before hosting West Orange next Thursday night.
