Women's Water Polo rocks Wekiva and Apopka

After a strong preseason showing, Women's Water Polo opened up their 2018 season with a pair of blowout victories in Metro West play, 21-0 over visiting Wekiva and 17-2 over Apopka. In the Wekiva opener, DP (2-0) shot out to a quick 5-0 lead in the first quarter which then ballooned to 13-0 at the half. Senior Caroline Grzeszczak led the Panthers with five goals on five shots, three assists and a career-high ten steals. Sophomore Hope Miller delivered with five goals as well and assisted on two more scores. Senior Bailey Valdes scored three goals, added a team-high five assists and picked up two steals. Senior Alyssa Hyman (three goals, five steals), junior Brittney Bonnin (two goals, assist, four steals), sophomore Ana Luisa Cotta (two goals, assist, three steals) and junior Peyton Haines (goal, assist) completed the scoring for the Panthers. Sophomore goaltender Samantha Horency finished the night with six steals, an assist and a save. Game two saw much of the same dominance as DP jumped out to an 8-0 lead in the first quarter and coasted to a 17-2 victory over Apopka. Bailey Valdes scored a career-high six goals, assisted on three and picked up two steals while Hope Miller buried four goals in the twine to go with two assists. Caroline Grzeszczak (two goals, three assists, three steals), Peyton Haines (two goals, three steals), Brittney Bonnin (two goals, assist, four steals) and Ana Luis Cotta (goal) rounded out the score columns while Samantha Horency was dialed in with six saves, two assists and six steals in goal. The ladies have a few days off from competition as Gainesville does not field a women's team so they'll be back in action next Wednesday against Windermere and Edgewater.
