Second baseman Dejia Benn (2018)

Statement victory for Softball
2/26/2018 8:22:00 PM

Softball battled back to take a 2-1 lead in the fourth inning and clinched the victory with a clutch defensive play in the seventh to defeat Windermere Monday night. After conceding a run in the visiting fourth inning, DP counter-punched in the bottom of the inning with two of their own. Dejia Benn led off with a single to center and Hannah Eden drove her to third with a sharp single to right. With one out, Megan Rush's grounder to short brought home Benn with the tying run. That brought Tiare Kong to the plate with runners at the corners and Kong laid down a perfect bunt that scored Hannah Eden with the go-ahead run. With a 2-1 lead, the DP defense stepped up behind pitcher Raychel Trocki, who was outstanding in her own right, allowing just four hits while fanning three. In the top of the fifth, Windermere loaded the bases with one out but center fielder Gracie Lopez threw out the runner from third trying to steal home for the second out. After the Wolverines loaded the bases again, right fielder Megan Rush snared a line drive to end the threat. Things looked shaky again in the seventh, though, as Windermere put the tying run on first base. With two outs, Windermere reached base again on an error but the runner on second tried to advance to third on the play. Junior Megan Rush came up with the play of the game, though, as she fired to third baseman Tiare Kong, who slapped the tag on the runner to end the game. Lopez, Benn and Eden registered DP's only hits of the night but that's all they needed to improve to 5-1 on the season. The Panthers jump back into District play Tuesday at home vs. Freedom.
