Junior CJ Cantwell (2018)

Baseball's hot start continues
3/4/2018 1:04:00 PM

Junior CJ Cantwell's RBI single in the bottom of the ninth inning brought home Brandon Fields with the game-winning run as Baseball clipped Clearwater Countryside, 3-2, for their fifth straight victory to open the season, their best start since 1998. DP (5-0) took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Brandon Fields drew a two-out walk, went second on a wild pitch, stole third and scored on an error off the bat of Sebastian Oetterer. After Countryside tied the game in thr third, DP jumped back on top in the home half. Brandon Fields reached base on an error, stole third and scored on a sacrifice fly by Diego Garcia-Chirinos. Countryside knotted the score at 2-2 later in the fifth but DP had numerous opportunities to break the game open and failed to capitalize in the fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth innings. In the ninth though, DP got the break they needed. Brandon Fields reached base for the third time when he was hit by a pitch, stole second and then third. With one out and the infield drawn in to make a play at the plate, CJ Cantwell drilled a 1-0 pitch into right field and Brandon Fields trotted home to give DP the victory. Once again, the DP pitching staff was sharp. Logan Bryan got the start and went three innings, allowed just one hit and no earned runs. Eric Leon-Gil came on in relief in the fourth and threw two innings of no-hit ball while Casey Carns went four innings, allowed just one hit and picked up the victory. Offensively, CJ Cantwell had the hot bat, going 4-4 with an RBI to up his season average to .583. Brandon Fields reached base on an error, a walk and was hit by a pitch and scored all three Panther runs while stealing a career-high four bases. Fields now has eight stolen bases in five games and with a lot of baseball left, look for him to challenge Ron Columbo's all-time season steals record with 29 set back in 1994. DP will be back on the diamond Wednesday against Lake Nona.
