Senior Shaquille Kellyman set a new school record at the Regional Championship with a 400-lb bench press in the 219-pound division (2018)

Men's Weightlifting crowned two champions and the team placed fourth among the field of 20 at yesterday's  Regional Championship. Senior Shaquille Kellyman won the 219-pound weight class and in the process became the first lifter in Dr. Phillips history to bench press 400 pounds in competition. Kellyman added a 225 pound clean and jerk for a total lift of 625 pounds.

In the 169-pound weight class, senior Avinash Jawahir benched 300 pounds and cleaned  an additional 285 to finish with a 585-pound total, earning him the Regional Championship as well. In the 154-pound class, senior Dereck Neal's 455-pound total lift earned him a second place finish, while in the 199-pound class, senior Devodney Alford was the Regional Runner-Up with a total lift of 580 pounds. Freshman Christian Mercado has laid the foundation for a tremendous future, as he placed fifth in the 154-pound class with a total weight of 385 pounds. Both Kellyman and Jawahir automatically qualified for the State Championship meet in Panama City April 7th!
