Junior quarterback Aaliyah Govan reaches for a score vs. Olympia (2017)

Flag Football stuns 3rd-ranked Godby
4/7/2018 7:02:00 PM

At the Capital City Classic in Tallahassee, fifth-ranked Flag Football upset third-ranked Tallahassee Godby, 19-13, to improve to 6-0 on the season and advanced to the semifinal round of arguably the state's best mid-season tournament. After a 40-yard pass completion between two defenders that set the Panthers up with first and goal, quarterback Aaliyah Govan found Stephanie Oliveira for a two-yard touchdown pass to give DP a 6-0 lead in the first quarter. The Panthers threatened to double the lead in the second quarter but a Govan pass into the end zone sailed through her receiver's hands and was intercepted by Godby and led to a game-tying touchdown. On their next possession, Godby drove down the field and scored again to take a 12-6 lead into the half. In the third, however, the Panthers' special teams gave them a big lift. After punting the ball back to Godby, the Cougars tried to pitch the ball back to another returner but DP sophomore Aunjani Miller intercepted the pitch and took it to the house for the game-tying touchdown. With the score knotted at 12-12, DP put together the winning drive in the fourth quarter, capped by Govan's pass to Beyonce Sierra from 15 yards out for a 19-12 lead with 3:35 left. DP would get the ball back after a quick defensive stand but Godby stopped the Panthers on fourth down in their own territory and proceeded to drive down the field to the one-yard line. With 38 seconds left in the game, Godby threw into the end zone but Aunjani Miller came up huge again with a game-sealing interception. Miller finished with three flag pulls to lead the defense while Megan Lapeyrouse caught five passes on offense and nabbed an interception as well.  In the semifinal game against top-ranked  (Class 1A) Choctawhatchee, DP jumped out to an early 13-0 lead and was in command heading into the second half but the Indians stormed back and scored 20 unanswered points to hand the Panthers their first loss of the season. Unfortunately, severe weather, including tornado warnings, in the Tallahassee area forced Saturday's remaining games to be canceled. DP (6-1) will head over to Windermere Monday night.
