Women's Lacrosse defeated defending State Champion Bishop Moore, 11-10, to claim the 2018 District Championship

Women's Lax reclaims District Championship

What a difference a year makes...or a month. One year ago, Women's Lacrosse finished the regular season undefeated and nationally-ranked, only to have Bishop Moore avenge an early-season loss and derail their dreams with a four-goal victory in the District Championship. The Hornets then went on to win the State Championship DP coveted. Fast forward to 2018 where the two powerhouses collided again in the regular season and the Hornets dominated the Panthers, 12-3, the earn the top seed in the District Tournament. But last night at Bill Spoone Stadium, second-seeded Dr. Phillips would turn the tables with a thrilling 11-10 victory, giving the Panthers their seventh District Championship in the last ten years and they did it with a combination of confidence, execution and consistency. With the Hornets keying on top goal scorer Zariah Durham all night, sophomore Michelle McGrath stepped up to lead the Panthers with four goals and assisted on a fifth while junior Justine Decker, shadowed all night as well, delivered three goals, two assists and scooped up five ground balls. DP (15-4) opened up with a three-goal burst in the first five minutes of play and never relinquished the lead the rest of the way, despite the Hornets closing the margin to a single goal several times in the second half, including the final minute of regulation. Junior goaltender Layla Benaissa came up big in the second half with critical saves to keep the Hornets at bay but arguably the most important statistic of the night was owned by sophomore Mary Sosebee, who finished with 15 draw controls in addition to her two goals and an assist. That prevented Bishop Moore from dominating the time of possession and limited their offensive opportunities which crippled the Panthers one year ago. Senior Yasmeen Garib added two goals while junior Kambria Barry was credited with an assist. DP will now travel to the east coast to take on Viera (13-4) in the Regional Quarterfinal at 7:00 pm Thursday, April 26th. Should they win, they would travel again for the Regional Semifinal game featuring the winner of West Orange and Lake Highland Monday, April 30th.
