Water Polo seniors Caroline Grzeszczak, Bailey Valdes, Alyssa Hyman and Emma Hallson (2018)

Women's Water Polo season ends in Regional
4/25/2018 2:15:00 PM

Despite a spectacular comeback that saw them battle back from a two-goal deficit late in the fourth quarter, Women's Water Polo's season came to close after falling to Winter Park, 7-4, in overtime in the Regional Semifinal. DP (18-9) trailed the Wildcats 2-0 in the second quarter before Caroline Grzeszczak took a pass from Bailey Valdes and deposited it into the corner to pull the Panthers within a goal at the 4:19 mark. With 31 seconds left in the half, Emma Hallson fed Bailey Valdes on the equalizing goal to send the teams into halftime tied at 2-2. Winter Park capitalized on a power play goal just over three minutes into the third quarter and pushed the lead back to two goals with another score just 32 seconds later. Down 4-2, DP clawed its way back in the fourth quarter as Bailey Valdes punched in a goal off a Grzeszczak assist to make it 4-3 with 6:06 left. Despite the amount of time left, neither team could get much going offensively but in the final 30 seconds, Samantha Horency blocked a shot on goal and heaved a long pass to Caroline Grzeszczak who broke free down the left side of the pool and buried the tying goal into the corner with just 19 seconds remaining in regulation, sending the game to overtime. After a defensive struggle by both teams, Winter Park scored three goals in a 41-second span of the first overtime period, the last coming with a second remaining to take a 7-4 lead. The second three-minute overtime saw DP have several chances to get back into the game but it wasn't to be as the Wildcats moved on to the Regional Championship. Obviously a tough way to end the season, but congratulations are in order for seniors Caroline Grzeszczak, Bailey Valdes, Emma Hallson and Alyssa Hyman on their tremendous season as well as their careers. Grzeszczak finished her senior year with a team-leading 80 goals and 87 steals with 45 assists. Bailey Valdes was second on the team this season with 77 goals and led the team with 47 assists to go along with 32 steals. Emma Hallson was tremendous on defense this year with 50 steals while scoring seven goals and collecting 21 assists. Alyssa Hyman closed out her career with 14 goals, seven assists and 19 steals. DP also had some noteworthy statistics compiled by sophomore goaltender Samantha Horency, who finished the season with a school-record 257 saves, assisted on 28 goals and was third on the team with 58 steals, junior Brittney Bonnin, second on the team with 76 steals, and sophomore Hope Miller, third on the team with 44 goals. Unless a team wins a State Championship the season never really ends well, but there's much to be proud of regardless, especially the team taking home the program's first District Championship since 2013. Congratulations to the ladies as well as to coach Leonardo Leon Ramirez and his assistants, Joe Orchard and Reed Davis!
