Football falls to Osceola in Kickoff Classic
8/18/2018 12:03:00 PM

The best way to see how far you’ve come and how far you need to go is by scheduling the best competition early on in the season, and that includes the Kickoff Classic. Friday night, DP Football hosted Osceola at the new Austin Tindall Stadium in Kissimmee and while the Kowboys dealt the Panthers a 21-3 defeat, the experience highlighted some positives to build on and areas that will need to improve as the season progresses. DP’s defense will certainly be formidable and the starting unit that played in the first half proved just as much, limiting the Kowboys to just seven points, courtesy of a Kowboys’ scoring drive that began at the DP 20. Offensively, DP drove into the Osceola red zone several times throughout the contest but a 32-yard first quarter field goal by junior Riley Stephens was all they had to show for it as an experienced Osceola defense stifled the Panthers at opportune times, including twice inside the ten yard line. Individually, senior captain Jaquarri Powell recovered two fumbles and collected three tackles in just over two quarters of work while junior linebacker Stephen Dix racked up seven tackles in the same span. While the offense struggled to find its rhythm, the Panthers saw seven receivers catch at least one pass with senior Devon Buckhanon and junior Jacquez Jones leading the way with three apiece. Junior Nivon Holland led the return game with two kickoff returns for 42 yards.  DP will get right back to work and prepare for their interstate battle with Georgia State Champion Lee County on the road next Saturday at 11:00 am.
