Football comes up short vs. West Orange
9/8/2018 2:44:00 PM

A remarkable second half rally saw Dr. Phillips Football erase a 24-point deficit to pull within three, but it wasn't enough to overcome a sluggish start and 18 penalties in a 31-28 loss to visiting West Orange. DP (1-2) took nearly two full quarters to find their offensive rhythm and the Warriors capitalized. West Orange built a 14-0 lead in the first quarter on the strength of a 50-yard touchdown run and a a 33-yard touchdown pass in their first three drives. After DP was forced to punt on their fourth consecutive drive to open the game, West Orange took advantage of good field position at the DP 40 and tacked on a 25-yard field goal to push their lead to 17-0.

DP got things going offensively from that point forward. After Jalen Washington returned the kickoff 26 yards to the 31, quarterback Brenden Cyr broke off a 21-yard run and then hit Devon Buckhanon (14 yards), Arron Edwards (12), and Buckhanon again (11) for three straight first downs. Three plays later, Brandon Fields slipped through into the secondary and galloped 17 yards for a touchdown to cut the margin to 17-7 right before the half. On their opening drive of the third quarter, the Panthers were poised to strike again when Cyr hit Jacquez Jones for a 32-yard gain and then took it himself for a 34-yard run down to the West Orange six yard line. On first and goal, however, a false start penalty pushed them back five and the drive stalled as the field goal team trotted out for a chip shot attempt from 23 yards that would have sliced the West Orange lead to seven. The bad breaks continued, though, as the snap sailed overhead for a 27-yard loss and an impressive drive resulted in nothing more than a turnover on downs.

West Orange capitalized on the DP miscue with a three-play, 59-yard drive that culminated in a 39-yard touchdown pass for a 24-7 lead and drove home the eventual dagger with a 34-yard interception return for a touchdown on DP's ensuing possession. Down 31-7, the Panthers responded with a 9-play, 66-yard drive as Brenden Cyr plunged in from a yard out to make it 31-14. With 4:30 left in the fourth quarter, Cyr hit Devon Buckhanon for a ten-yard touchdown to cut the margin to 31-21. West Orange coughed up the football on the first play of the their next drive and Frank Maciejczyk pounced on the loose ball to breathe more life into the DP offense but the Panthers couldn't capitalize, turning the ball over on downs at the West Orange 28. Still down by ten, the Panthers forced a West Orange punt and drove 60 yards in six plays as sophomore quarterback Canaan Mobley found Jalen Washington for a 34-yard score to pull the Panthers to 31-28 with a minute left. DP's onside kick was recovered by West Orange, however, and the Warriors ran out the clock for the 31-28 victory.

Despite the early struggle, the DP offense set school records for pass completions (26) and attempts (41) while Brenden Cyr's 23 completions also set a new school record, eclipsing Alton Meeks' mark of 22 against Apopka in 2012. Cyr threw for 227 yards on 23-36 passing and also ran for 85 yards and a score on eight carries. Jacquez Jones and Devon Buckhanon each hauled in a career-high eight catches while Arron Edwards and Jalen Washington caught four and three, respectively. Defensively, credit Stephen Dix and Japerri Powell with 12 tackles each, with Powell also registering a forced fumble and a fumble recovery. Junior Shemar Williams came up with seven stops and forced two fumbles. The tough road continues for DP as they head up to Apopka Friday.
