Japerri Powell rushed for 170 yards and three touchdowns to lead DP past Freedom, 41-6, earning him his second Apex Wealth Management Player of the Game of the 2018 season

Ground game rolls as Football rocks Freedom
10/14/2018 6:41:00 AM

Senior Japerri Powell rushed for 170 yards on ten carries and scored a career-high three touchdowns to lead Football to a 41-6 thrashing of visiting Freedom on Senior Night. Powell got DP rolling immediately on the game's opening play, taking a direct snap and knifing through the defense for a 57-yard touchdown run that kickstarted a 310-yard rushing performance by the Panthers. After Freedom capitalized on a DP interception and cut the margin to 7-6, Powell counter-punched immediately, this time on a 50-yard touchdown run that saw him spin off and away from five tacklers on the way to the end zone for a 14-6 DP lead. The points mounted quickly from there as DP (3-5) tacked on touchdowns in three consecutive drives. Special teams got in on the action when sophomore Jalen Washington returned a Freedom punt 81 yards for a touchdown to push the lead to 21-6. Washington, who finished with 118 return yards, had a 66-yard return called back earlier on a penalty, which would have set the offense up at the Freedom one yard line. DP wasn't finished yet. After forcing another Freedom punt, the Panthers drove 64 yards in nine plays, highlighted by junior Kovsky Timothee's 25-yard burst and capped by Japerri Powell's third touchdown of the half, this time from a yard out, to make it 28-6 at the half.

DP didn't relent when they came out of the locker room in the third quarter. Junior Brandon Fields muscled his way down the field for 49 yards on five carries and Jacquez Jones hauled in an 18-yard pass from Canaan Mobley before Fields punched it in from four yards out as the lead grew to 35-6. Late in the fourth quarter, Freedom was poised to salvage something from the experience, driving down to the DP 23 but senior Jayden Ellis stepped in front of a pass and rumbled 77 yards for a touchdown on the game's last play for the 41-6 final. Defensively, Stephen Dix and Cameron Williams each finished with 12 tackles apiece.

DP has now defeated Freedom in 13 consecutive games and sits undefeated in District 5, having won 42 consecutive district games. Standing in the way of the Panthers' 11th straight District Championship, however, are the Olympia Titans, who lead the district with a 3-0 record. DP and Olympia will clash Friday night at Olympia with the winner taking home the district crown. Kickoff is set for 7:00 pm.
