Stephen Dix (29) recovered a fumble and returned an interception for a touchdown and Japerri Powell (1) accounted for 117 all-purpose yards and two touchdowns in DP's 44-13 victory over Olympia (2018)

Football mauls Olympia for District title
10/20/2018 1:46:00 PM

Junior linebacker Stephen Dix' 15-yard interception return for a touchdown in the third quarter broke open a close game and ignited a 20-0 second half onslaught as Football buried host Olympia, 44-13, to claim its 11th consecutive District Championship Friday night. DP (4-5) intercepted Olympia quarterbacks a school-record five times, including two that were returned for touchdowns that were called back on penalties. Senior Japerri Powell collected 117 all-purpose yards and scored two touchdowns while quarterback Brenden Cyr threw for 99 yards and ran for 74 to lead both categories.

DP capitalized quickly in the first quarter on the first of six Olympia turnovers after Stephen Dix pounced on a fumble at the Titans' nine yard line on Olympia's opening drive. Three plays later, Brenden Cyr lofted a perfect pass into the back right corner and senior Devon Buckhanon out-leaped the defender for a seven-yard touchdown to give DP a 7-0 lead. Olympia cut into the lead with an eight-play drive that culminated with a 37-yard field goal and wrestled the momentum from the Panthers after recovering the ensuing onside kick at the DP 45. After three consecutive incomplete passes, Olympia faked the punt but Japerri Powell and Bryan Bell-Anderson teamed up for a two-yard tackle for a loss to give DP possession at the 42. The Panthers hit for three straight first downs with seven-yard run by Brenden Cyr, a 16-yard pass from Cyr to Trey Schyck, and a 19-yard run by Cyr down to the Olympia seven yard line. Two plays later, Brandon Fields took it inside the pylon from five yards out to push the lead to 14-3 with 25 seconds left in the first quarter.

Olympia would respond again with a solid eight-play drive covering 57 yards but stalled at the DP 13 forcing the Titans to settle for a 30-yard field goal to shave the margin to 14-6. After DP couldn't convert on fourth down at the Olympia 34, the Titans had a golden opportunity to capitalize with 5:34 left in the half. After connecting on three long second-down pass plays, Olympia had first and goal at the DP 10, but on second down, senior safety TJ Young picked off the pass in the back of the end zone and raced for what would have been a school-record 109-yard touchdown return. An illegal block below the waist during the return negated the touchdown but the Panthers took over at their own four yard line with plenty of time on the clock. A 12-yard burst by Brandon Fields, a 20-yard pass from Cyr to Jacquez Jones and a pass interference penalty gave DP a first down at the Olympia 15 with no time left on the clock. With one untimed down awarded due to the defensive penalty, junior kicker Riley Stephens split the uprights from 32 yards out and DP went into the halftime break with a 17-6 lead.

In the third quarter, sophomore Jalen Washington's 17-yard punt return set the DP offense up at the Olympia 39 and after a 15-yard reception by Devon Buckhanon and a six-yard first down run by Brandon Fields, Japerri Powell muscled his way into the end zone from the four to push the lead to 24-6 with 8:32 left in the period. Olympia wasn't going away that easily, though, and rebounded immediately with an 80-yard touchdown run on their next snap to bring them back to 24-13 and continued their momentum on their next possession with a 15-yard first down reception to their own 34. But from that point forward, the DP defense wrapped themselves around the Titans like a python. Facing third and 25 from their own 19, Olympia looked to set up a screen but Stephen Dix stepped in front of the pass for his first interception of the season and took it to the house for a 15-yard touchdown to push DP's lead to 31-13. The horror continued for Olympia on their next play as the quarterback rolled to his right looking downfield but junior linebacker Steve Julssaint dropped back into the zone, picked off the pass and returned it 17 yards down to the Olympia 10. Four plays later, Japerri Powell ploughed in from one yard out for his second touchdown and the lead swelled to 38-13 heading to the fourth quarter. While the lead was comfortable, the Panther defense wasn't. With 9:23 to play, junior cornerback Tevin Griffey intercepted a long pass at the DP 30 and after a 28-yard pass from Canaan Mobley to Jalen Washington, Mobley found Isaiah Givens over the middle and the senior dragged two tacklers into the end zone for a 35-yard touchdown for a 44-13 lead at the 7:05 mark. DP would close out the game with yet another interception, this time from sophomore Jalen Moore, as they eclipsed the previous record of four set back in 2003 against Pine Ridge.

DP has now defeated Olympia in each of their last 16 meetings over the past 14 years and now looks ahead to Thursday's regular season finale at Cypress Creek. DP has clinched a first round home playoff game, November 9th, that's shaping up to be against the winner of this week's game between Treasure Coast and Centennial, but won't be confirmed until the regular season concludes.
