It came down to the final event of the night but when the 400 freestyle relay was done, Dr. Phillips Men's Swimming laid claim to its first District Championship since 2014. DP netted 420 total points to Olympia's 405. Seniors Gavin Collins, James Sweet, Hayden Joossens and Max Meisenheimer held off second place Olympia, touching the wall in a season-best 3:20.25 to earn event gold and in the process, dethroned the Titans who had won the previous three team titles. Ironically, the 400 free relay was only the Panthers' second event win of the day, but exceptional depth provided DP with top eight finishers in every event, including two events (50 free and 100 free) that saw four swimmers finish in the top eight. Freshman Sole Fratila earned the District Championship in the 500 freestyle in a season-best 5:07.08 while DP finished runners-up in both the 200 medley relay (Max Collingwood, Gabe Madej, Dan Magrino, James Sweet) in 1:46.21 and the 200 free relay (Max Meisenheimer, Hayden Joossens, Dan Magrino, Gavin Collins) in 1:31.03. In the 100 free, DP stacked the final heat and the points piled up for Hayden Joossens (third in 50.37), Max Meisenheimer (fifth in 51.16), Gavin Collins (sixth in 51.26) and James Sweet (seventh in 51.79), while earlier in the 50 free, Meisenheimer claimed fourth (22.66), Joossens fifth (22.91), Collins sixth (22.97) and Gabe Madej eighth (23.21). DP placed three swimmers in the top eight in the 200 freestyle as Sole Fratila picked up the bronze in 1:53.47, Dan Magrino was fourth in 1:53.51 and James Sweet sixth in 1:54.40. In the 100 backstroke, Max Collingwood earned the bronze in 1:01.25 followed by Ricky Cheng in fourth (1:02.60) and Daniel Melendez fifth in 1:06.48. Dan Magrino finished as the bronze medalist in the 100 fly (56.76) with Martin Arias taking sixth in 58.80. Arias also placed fifth in the 500 free in 5:33.75 and seventh in the 200 IM in 2:13.98. Gabe Madej earned DP's final top three placing with the bronze medal finish in the 100 breast in 1:02.41. DP will now await the results from other district competitions to verify who advances to the Regional Championship next week in Clearwater. Already in automatically are Sole Fratila (500 free) and the 400 free relay team.
