Senior Kayla Smith will be heading back to the State Championship meet, this time in two individual events, after leading Women's Swimming to a tenth place finish at the Regional Championship Saturday in Clearwater. Smith cut a full second off her season-best time in her signature event, the 100 backstroke, and moved up one position from her seeded time for a sixth place finish in 58.45. Smith will also head down to Stuart next Saturday to compete in the 100 freestyle after placing seventh in a personal record 53.55. Freshman McKenzie Moreland finished 22nd in both her events, the 200 IM (2:20.95) and the 100 fly (1:01.74), cutting time in both events while moving up one spot from her seeded time. Junior Sam Horency also placed 22nd with a time of 25.81 in the 50 freestyle. DP had outstanding showings in all three relay events, particularly the 400 freestyle. McKenzie Moreland, senior Julia Batzer, junior Ana Luisa Cotta and Sam Horency shredded their season-best time by an astounding 17 seconds (3:48.85) to place 13th overall, three spots higher than their preliminary seed. In the 200 free relay, Kayla Smith, Julia Batzer, Ana Luisa Cotta and Sam Horency moved up a spot to finish eighth in 1:41.84, three seconds faster than their District finish. In the day's opening event, the 200 medley relay, Smith, Luisa Cotta, Moreland and Horency dropped two seconds of their season-best mark to place ninth in 1:54.35. Congratulations on a great season by the ladies and best of luck to Kayla Smith at the State Championship!
