Men's Golf freshman Brendan Valdes wins the 2018 Drive, Chip and Putt National Championship at Augusta National

Brendan Valdes 11th at State Championship
11/7/2018 9:19:00 PM

Sophomore Brendan Valdes finished with a two day total of 148, four-over par, at Mission Inn to place 11th of 95 golfers at the 2018 Men's Golf State Championship. Day one action saw Valdes shake off some nerves after a string of three bogeys on 3, 4 and 5 with a birdie at the par three eighth hole to make the turn at two-over par 37. On the back nine, Valdes drained an eagle putt at the par five 14th to pull even but bogeys at the par three 15th and the par five 17th backed him up into a sixth-place tie at two-over par 74 after the first round of play.

Day two proved to be as tough as day one on the front nine with bogeys at the par four 4th and the par four 7th but Valdes roared right back. On the par three 8th, Valdes sank a 50-foot putt for birdie and followed up with another birdie at the par four 9th to draw even on the day at the turn. After a bogey at the par three 12th, Valdes conquered the par five 14th again, this time with a birdie, to get back to even par. Unfortunately, the par five 17th proved to be his nemesis for the second day in a row as a double bogey led to a final round 74. Valdes finished with a total of four birdies and an eagle for the tournament and capped his outstanding season with yet another stellar showing at the State Championship. Valdes, already a Metro, District and Regional Champion whose name is held in the same context as professional golfers Robert Damron and Patrick Damron in the DP record book, will return next year to not only shoot for an individual State Championship but lead what could be one of the best Dr. Phillips teams in school history to a team title, one that has eluded them since 1999.
