Women's Basketball stuns Oak Ridge in OT
12/13/2018 11:16:00 PM

Zoe Alexander scored 20 points, including six in overtime, and added five rebounds, four assists and three steals to lead Women's Basketball to a thrilling 53-49 victory over visiting Oak Ridge. DP (5-4) trailed by one in the first quarter but freshman Skylar Thompson rattled home a deep three at the buzzer to give the Panthers a 10-8 lead heading into the second. Thompson, who finished with five points, opened the quarter with another clutch bucket, driving through the lane for a layup to push the lead to 12-8, and Truly Le's three from the top of the arc closed out the first half with DP up by six, 19-13.  In the third, freshman Ailey Schyck ripped down a rebound and went right back up for two to extend the lead to 23-15 at the 4:22 mark. Zoe Alexander gave DP its largest lead of the night, 25-15, with a driving layup but the Pioneers, who were plagued by foul trouble in the second half, clawed back with a 10-2 run into the fourth quarter. Up 29-26, Alexander heaved a touchdown pass to Schyck under the basket for an uncontested bucket to push the lead to five with just 4:16 left to play. In what seemed like clutch play after clutch play from both teams down the stretch, Porchia Washington looked to be trapped in the far left corner but the sophomore guard delivered a dramatic three with 3:37 to go to lift the lead back to five, 34-29. Oak Ridge tied the score at 36-36 as we went under two minutes but once again, DP's youth revolution brought the home crowd to its feet. Freshman Franaja Williams hit a baseline floater for a 38-36 lead at 1:30 and Zoe Alexander added a free throw for a three-point lead. After Oak Ridge cut the lead to two with a free throw, the Pioneers beat the buzzer with a game-tying 16-foot jumper to send the game into overtime tied at 39-39. Senior Nisa Costa wrestled the lead back for the Panthers with a three from the left corner and after Franaja Williams picked up a critical steal, Zoe Alexander delivered the dagger with a three from the top of the arc for a 48-42 lead with 1:57 left. Truly Le would sink a pair of free throws and Ailey Schyck followed with a bucket for a 52-43 lead with 1:06 remaining, but Oak Ridge wan't ready to concede yet. After a 6-0 run that cut the DP lead to just three, 52-49, the Pioneers fouled Alexander with 8.4 seconds left and the senior put the game away with a free throw. Strong night across the board for DP as Ailey Schyck finished with nine points and eight rebounds, Truly Le tallied nine points and Beyonce Sierra was strong on the glass with five rebounds. Dr. Phillips will get a few days to breathe before heading to Olympia Tuesday night.
