12/15/2018 8:06:00 AM

Men's Basketball saw five players score in double figures and kept pace with nationally-ranked Oak Ridge for three quarters but in the fourth, the visiting Pioneers outgunned the Panthers, 31-15, to win going away, 105-78. In front of the most electric home crowd to visit the House of Payne in years, DP (4-3) jumped out to a 10-5 lead in the first quarter behind a pair of threes and a ten-foot jumper from Abdoulaye Thiam with 5:07 left. Thiam would add another three and Jordan Poventud's layup underneath at the buzzer kept the Panthers close, down 23-22. Second quarter action was equally furious. After Oak Ridge opened the quarter on a 5-0 run, Shi Gaskin brought the crowd to life again with a monstrous dunk off a rebound and Jordan Poventud banked home a long three to bring DP back within two, 33-31 with 4:11 left in the half. Gaskin came through again with a layup and drew the foul to make it 38-36 Oak Ridge but the Pioneers went on a 7-0 run before Abdoulaye Thiam's three from the left corner stopped the bleeding. Another 6-0 run by the Pioneers pushed their lead to 13 just before the half but Devon Buckhanon's rebound and put-back bucket kept DP in the game down ten at the break, 51-41. In the third quarter, Oak Ridge went on another patented run, outscoring the Panthers, 9-2, to open the period and built as much as a 17-point lead (65-48). Rakeem Perry battled through early foul trouble and sparked DP with 11 of his 13 points in the third quarter and Abdoulaye Thiam converted a three-point play with 15 seconds left to pull the Panthers back to an 11-point deficit, 74-63, heading into the fourth quarter. As they did twice before, Oak Ridge seized the momentum immediately on the inbound, reeling off a 9-0 run and took command for the rest of the way with a flurry of highlight dunks and remarkable shooting from downtown to seal the victory. Abdoulaye Thiam led DP with 19 points, Devon Buckhanon and Jordan Poventud finished with 14 apiece, Rakeem Perry added 13 and Shi Gaskin closed out the night with 11 points. DP will take on Masters Academy Wednesday at 1:30 at TFA's City Beautiful Tournament.

JV Basketball went punch for punch from the opening tip to the final buzzer but Oak Ridge got the last shot in before the buzzer in a 64-61 victory over the Panthers, who snapped a three-game winning streak and fell to 3-3. Isaiah Givens finished with 23 points. Freshmen Basketball bounced back from a puzzling loss to Freedom with an exciting 53-48 overtime victory over Oak Ridge. Tied at 36-36 after regulation, Damien Franklin sank five free throws in the overtime period and finished the night with eight points. Kendall Rice and Luis Federick scored eight each as well while John Chehansky pitched in with seven points. JV and Freshmen Basketball will be back in action January 9th at Olympia.
