Sophomore Abdouylaye Thiam (12) vs. Lake Mary (2017)

Thiam, Perry drive Men's Hoops past TMA
12/20/2018 12:36:00 AM

Junior guard Abdoulaye Thiam poured in a team-high 31 points, ripped down six rebounds and senior guard Rakeem Perry finished with 16 points and seven assists as Men's Basketball defeated Masters Academy, 71-66, in the opening round of the City Beautiful Tournament at First Academy. DP (5-3) built a 12-point lead at halftime (29-17) but held off the Eagles in a furious fourth quarter offensive battle that saw both teams combine for 61 points. In the first half, Thiam's thundering dunk punctuated the Panthers' run that provided the necessary cushion that held off the TMA surge in the second half.  Junior Shi Gaskin's 12 rebound effort and two clutch free throws in the last minute of play helped secure the victory. Rakeem Perry controlled the pace at the point guard spot but no play was bigger than his defensive effort with 15 seconds left in the game. TMA had possession down by just three but Perry picked the ball free from the guard and took it down the court to the rack for the bucket that iced the game. DP advances to today's quarterfinal round at 2:30 pm against a very strong Daytona Beach Mainland team.
