Junior Kaitlyn Montague (2018)

Women's Soccer resilient in victory

Women's Soccer overcame a 1-0 first half deficit with a pair of second half goals and some crafty defensive adjustments in a 2-1 victory over host Apopka. DP (7-0-2) conceded a goal early off a free kick but never panicked. After some formation adjustments at halftime, the Panthers picked up the equalizer when Kaitlyn Montague buried a free kick into the upper right 90 with 20 minutes left in the match. Tied at 1-1, DP was issued a blue card (player ejection for the remainder of the match) when goalkeeper MacKenzie Montague tried to make a defensive play in the box. The Panthers had to play with ten players the rest of the way with sophomore midfielder Kirah Graham filling in for Montague in goal. Rather than sit back and wait for the clock to tick away eternally, DP went on the offensive and it paid off. In the 73rd minute, Kaitlyn Montague's free kick sailed into the box and deflected off an Apopka defender's head into the twine to give the Panthers a 2-1 lead. Now it was time for desperate defending and while it may have been rough around the edges at times, the strategy worked perfectly as the Panthers were able to exhaust their effort over the final seven minutes and hold off the Blue Darters for the victory. DP has now won six straight and gets a bit of a reprieve before heading to Clermont to take on East Ridge January 8th.
