Women's Wrestling takes home the team title and five individual championships at the 2018 Lady Pirate Classic

Women's Wrestling wins Lady Panther Tourney

For the 15th time in as many tournaments, Women's Wrestling was crowned team champions as they won the 31-team Lady Panther Tournament in the House of Payne, outscoring second place Freedom, 244-187, and third place Osceola (105). DP captured individual titles in seven weight classes and saw 12 wrestlers earn podium finishes. In the 100-pound class, junior Jessica Corredor improved her season record to 17-0 with 17 pins as she rolled through all three of her opponents from University, Olympia and Wekiva. In the 117-pound class, freshman Juliana Diaz pinned all three of her opponents as well (Freedom, Timber Creek, Osceola) to win the title and upped her mark to 16-1. Defending State Champion Karoline Ortiz (19-0) pinned three of her four opponents (Lyman, University, Orange City University) and scored a major decision victory (14-3) in the semifinal vs. Windermere en route to the 128-pound championship. Two-time State Champion Shania Gowan had a quick and easy day, pinning her two opponents from Orange City University and Freedom, to win the 162-pound crown as she upped her season record to 17-0 with 17 pins. DP swept the final three weight classes as well with Naomi Alezi registering pins in all three matches (University, University, Freedom) at 197 pounds, two-time State Champion Shedeline Ulysse pinning two of her three opponents (Poinciana, University) at 222 pounds, and State Champion Amani Guzman winning both her matches by pin over Freedom to win the 285-pound title. Sophomore Skyy Gowan earned a runner-up finish in the 172-pound class with a pair of pins in the quarterfinal (Windermere) and semifinal (Orange City University). Junior Jennifer Charles placed third at 134 pounds with pins in four of her five matches (Freedom, Boone, Jones, Liberty). Third place also went to junior Mikayla Fountain in the 140-pound class as she pinned three of four opponents (Mainland, Gateway and Mainland again in the third place match). Finishing fourth were senior Jennifer Gabriel at 147 pounds with pins over University and Mainland, and junior LeAnn Bernard at 184 pounds with a pin against Osceola. DP will have a pair of competitions this week beginning with Wekiva Wednesday and the Cypress Creek Tournament Saturday.
