In the annual Battle for the Belt, Men’s Wrestling came back twice from a five-point deficit to beat host Olympia, 43-30, to keep possession for the second consecutive year. In the opening match at 106 pounds, freshman Heriberto Zayas earned 17-3 major decision victory and senior Tyrese Hicks won by forfeit at 113. In the 120-pound division, sophomore Ethan Vanz earned a tough 3-1 decision to put DP up 13-0. Olympia earned pins in the next three matches to take an 18-13 lead but the Panthers responded well as junior Ja’Breil Etienne pinned his opponent at 145 pounds to give DP a 19-18 lead.  Olympia jumped ahead again with a victory at 152 to regain the lead, 24-19, but junior Sebastian Norman (160),  senior Salah Yunis (170), senior Chris Hanna (182), senior Christopher Jimenez (195) and junior Andre Young (220) reeled off consecutive victories, accounting for a 24-0 run, as DP pulled away for the victory. In the opening exhibition matches, DP picked up dominating wins by Jessica Corredor, Yahira Torres, Karoline Ortiz, Erie Zayas and Khizar Rasool. Men’s Wrestling now sits at 6-5 in duel meets and will travel to Windermere next Thursday.
