Senior guard Zoe Alexander (2019)

Women's Basketball holds off Lincoln
1/19/2019 12:15:00 AM

Senior guard Zoe Alexander poured in 31 points, including 12 in the fourth quarter, and ripped down nine rebounds to lead Women's Basketball to a 65-61 victory over visiting Tallahassee Lincoln. DP, winners of five straight and eight of their last nine games, trailed  the Trojans by two after one quarter, 16-14, but opened the second quarter with an 8-0 run. Senior Truly Le sandwiched a pair of threes around three remarkable plays from Alexander. Le buried her first from the top of the key and Alexander followed with a drive into the lane and dropped it in for two to give DP a 19-16 lead. Alexander capped the run with consecutive three-point plays before Le drained another three that was sparked by Porchia Washington diving for a loose ball rebound and feeding Le for the bucket. Washington then gave DP its largest lead of the half (31-24) with a three of her own at the 1:28 mark before Lincoln closed with a 5-0 run into the halftime break. In the third quarter, Franaja Williams opened up the scoring with a three from the right corner and Zoe Alexander's steal led to a layup for Truly Le to push the lead back to seven, 36-29, with just over four minutes left in the quarter. Lincoln would go on a 7-0 run to take a 41-40 lead but Alexander took over, scoring the final seven points of the period to give the Panthers a 47-41 lead after three quarters. In the fourth, things got a bit dicey. After Zoe Alexander drove right down the middle of the lane for a bucket to go up 52-44, Lincoln went on a 6-0 run to cut the margin to two, 54-52, with 4:15 left to play. Once again, though, Porchia Washington came up with another big play, knocking down a three from the left corner to stem the bleeding. Despite two Lincoln players fouling out, the Trojans were relentless defensively and managed to keep the game tight down the stretch. With 1:31 left, Alexander drove baseline and scored for a 61-55 lead but another three by Lincoln kept them in the game. Down 61-58 with the ball, Lincoln had an opportunity to tie the game but freshman Beyonce Sierra came down with a tremendous rebound, one of her six on the night, with 40 seconds left that led to a pair of Alexander free throws to push the lead back to five, 63-58. Lincoln charged down the court and drilled another three to cut the deficit to 63-61, but Alexander iced the game with a free throw, a steal with 11.5 seconds remaining, and another free throw for the 65-61 final. Truly Le finished with 15 points and six assists and Ailey Schyck collected five rebounds underneath. DP improves to 14-6 and will travel to Edgewater (0-13) Tuesday night.
