Women's Basketball shocks Lake Mary
1/30/2019 8:50:00 AM

In the House of Payne, Women’s Basketball pulled out all the stops on Senior Night and delivered a stunning upset of visiting Lake Mary, 55-46. DP (16-8) trailed the Rams (19-4) for just two minutes in the opening quarter before senior Layla Benaissa knocked down back-to-back threes to tie the game at 6-6 and the Panthers never trailed again, building as much as a 17-point lead in the fourth quarter. Heading into the second quarter up 10-7, senior Truly Le drained a three and a rebound and put-back by freshman Ailey Schyck kick-started a 9-0 run that culminated with another three from Truly Le that pushed their lead to 24-12. Senior Zoe Alexander then followed with a buzzer-beating three from the top of the arc to send the Panthers into the locker room up 27-14. Lake Mary made a push in the third quarter, cutting the lead to nine, 31-22, but Ailey Schyck ripped down another clutch rebound, one of her game-high ten boards, and banked it home to bring the lead back to double digits at the 4:16 mark. Truly Le splashed home her third three-pointer of the night and senior Natalya Thomas-Quintana closed out the quarter with a rebound and dropped it in at the buzzer as DP headed into the fourth up 41-26. Lake Mary would expectedly make the game interesting midway through with an 8-0 run and sliced the lead down to five, 51-46, with a minute left but Zoe Alexander sank two free throws with 42 seconds left and sealed the victory with a steal and layup with nine seconds remaining for the 55-46 final. Alexander finished with 21 points, four rebounds and three steals while Truly Le (11 points), Ailey Schyck (seven points, 11 rebounds), Natayla Thomas-Quintana (six points, five rebounds), Layla Benaissa (six points), Franaja Williams (two points) and Skylar Thompson (two points) rounded out the scoring in DP’s most impressive victory of the season to date. The regular season comes to a close tomorrow as the Panthers head to Evans (9-13).
