2/6/2019 7:58:00 AM

In the House of Payne, Men’s Basketball trailed visiting Timber Creek by as many as ten points in the third quarter, stormed back to take a 50-48 lead with 6:33 left in the fourth quarter, but could not hang on in a 66-65 loss to close out their home schedule. DP (10-13) trailed Timber Creek (19-5) by seven in the opening quarter but a three-pointer from 24 feet out by Rakeem Perry tied the game at 19-19 with 5:49 left in the half and Abdoulaye Thiam knocked down a long two with 90 seconds left to send the Panthers into the locker room down 27-25.  DP started slowly in the third as Timber Creek opened up the second half on a 5-0 run and stretched the lead to ten midway through before the Panthers battled back. A long three by Rakeem Perry, who finished with 14 points, a rebound and put-back off the glass by Devon Buckhanon (nine points on the night) and back-to-back baskets from Abdoulaye Thiam pulled DP back into contention with 1:04 left in the period. DP closed out with an 8-0 run as Rakeem Perry took it straight to the rack to draw within two, 47-45. Junior Brennensley Cajuste tied the game with a pair of free throws to open the fourth quarter and Thiam buried a three to give DP its first lead, 50-48, but it was short lived. Timber Creek answered every DP challenge in the final period, despite a Herculean effort by Devon Buckhanon with a pair of buckets with under 30 seconds left and a three by Abdoulaye Thiam with 3.4 seconds on the clock. Thiam finished with a team-high 23 points. DP honored its three seniors, Rakeem Perry, Devon Buckhanon and Justin Hunter prior to the game and will close out the regular season in Bartow Saturday as they take on Winter Haven at 10:00 am. JV Basketball built a 27-23 lead at the half and pulled away from Timber Creek down the stretch for a 65-57 victory to finish their season at 6-7. Mason Sheffield led the way with 15 for DP while Ledger Hatch dropped in 13.
