Sophomore Porchia Washington (2019)

Women's Basketball surges into title game
2/6/2019 11:00:00 PM

Sophomore Porchia Washington scored 11 points, ripped down nine rebounds and collected three steals to lead Women's Basketball to a 50-21 throttling of Cypress Creek in the District Semifinal Wednesday night. Washington accounted for nine consecutive points in a third quarter run and was a nightmare for the Bears on the glass and on the floor, as DP avenged their only District loss of the season. In the opening quarter, with DP trailing by one, sophomore Beyonce Sierra banked in a shot in the paint and scored twice more to force a Creek timeout during a 6-0 DP run. It wouldn't help. Back-to-back threes from Nisa Costa and Truly Le, as well as a steal in the backcourt and a resultant layup by Zoe Alexander, pushed the run to 16-0 as DP went into the half up 26-10. Things got worse for the Bears in the second half. After Ailey Schyck banked one in off the glass, Porchia Washington went on a tear, sandwiching a layup and a long three between a pair of steals and two buckets to push the lead to 37-14. With 2:37 left in the third, Truly Le stepped up and knocked down a three and Zoe Alexander capped the third quarter onslaught with another steal and a layup for a 42-14 lead. Alexander finished with a game-high 14 points to go with four rebounds, four steals and four assists. DP (18-8) will take on Oak Ridge at 7:00 pm Friday night in the gym looking for their first District Championship since 2014.
