After finishing as a runner-up a year ago, senior Tyrese Hicks captured his first career District Championship Friday night at Windermere, leading Men's Wrestling to a fourth-place team finish in the tournament, holding off fifth-place Edgewater by a mere half-point. Hicks rolled through the quarterfinal round with a first period pin (:30) over Evans and followed up with a 36-second pin over West Port in the semifinal. That victory pitted Hicks against Windermere's Ticiano Brito (23-11) in the title bout and Hicks muscled out a 4-2 victory to take home the 113-pound championship. In the 120-pound division, sophomore Ethan Vanz pinned Ocoee in the first period of their quarterfinal match and dominated Evans in the semifinal with a 12-4 major decision victory. Vanz came up short in the final against West Orange, however, but earned the first silver medal of his career. Senior Giovany Preval also earned a silver medal with victories over Edgewater (12-3 major decision) and a tough 4-3 decision over Olympia in the semifinal of the 138-pound class. In the championship bout, Preval fell to Wekiva, 16-6, but along with Hicks and Vanz, qualified for the Regional Tournament next Friday at Flagler Palm Coast. Joining his teammates at the Regional Tournament as an automatic qualifier is junior Ja'Breil Etienne, who placed third in the 145-pound weight class. Etienne began with a first period pin (1:31) over Apopka but stumbled in the semifinals, falling to Windermere. That sent him to the consolation bracket where Etienne dispatched Olympia by pin (3:28) in the semifinal and in the third-place consolation final, Etienne pinned Jaxson Kelly of Edgewater at 4:40 of the third period to secure the bronze medal. Other wrestlers accruing much-needed team points included junior Sebastian Norman (152 pounds), senior Christopher Liriano-Jimenez (182) and senior Jammell Sheppard (126), all with two victories in the consolation rounds. Regional Tournament competition will begin Friday in Bunnell and continue through Saturday. Top four finishers in each weight class will qualify for the State Tournament.
