Sophomore Shiquila Bryant hauls in a big reception vs. Evans (2017)

Flag Football stuns Boone

Sophomore quarterback Ni'Kira Smith capped a 13-point second half comeback with a 60-yard Hail Mary touchdown pass to senior Shiquila Bryant as time expired in 15th-ranked Flag Football's 20-19 victory over Boone last night in the Spoone. DP (2-1) trailed the Braves 13-0 in the first quarter but never panicked, instead relying on securing the defense and allowing them to put the offense in scoring position. It worked. In the second quarter the Panthers got on the board when Tamara St. Louis connected with Shiquila Bryant for a 40-yard touchdown and followed up with an extra point pass to Nisa Costa to pull within a touchdown, down 13-7. Boone responded quickly, though, with another touchdown before the half to take a 19-7 lead into the break. After a scoreless third quarter, Ni'Kira Smith found Nisa Costa for a six-yard touchdown pass midway through the fourth to cut Boone's lead to 19-13. Boone chewed up the clock but turned the football over on downs at the DP six with one minute left in regulation. That's all the Panthers needed. With seconds remaining, Ni'Kira Smith hooked up with Shiquila Bryant in full stride deep downfield for the game-tying score as the clock ran out. As the celebration continued, Smith and Bryant connected again for the game-winning extra point that punctuated the 20-19 come-from-behind victory. JV Flag Football also had a great night with a 13-0 victory over Boone that moves them to 3-0 on the season with three shutouts. Brianna Kulich threw for a touchdown and the defense picked up a pair of interceptions by Mary Waters and Mica Adams, who returned hers for a touchdown. Both teams will get some time to rest before taking on Evans Tuesday, March 26th.
