3/19/2019 12:30:00 PM

After a dominating opeing round victory over Brother Rice Thursday night in Chicago, Men’s Water Polo moved on to Friday’s quarterfinal round where they held off Naperville North in a thrilling 10-9 victory. After a 6-6 tie at halftime, the Panthers came out on fire in the second half and outpaced the Huskies, 4-1, in the third quarter to take a 10-7 lead but with their top two scorers on the bench with three exclusions each, DP withstood a furious fourth quarter rally and hung on for the victory. Sole Fratila scored six goals, Gavin Collins added two goals while Max Meisenheimer (goal, two assists) and James Sweet (goal, five steals) rounded out the scoring. Dan Magrino assisted on three scores and also collected five steals, the most important one coming on a counter attack inside five meters with under three minutes left to play that may have sealed the game. Gabe Madej came up big in the cage several times in the second half, finishing with 11 saves and a steal. That victory put the Panthers in the semifinal round for the first time in the their three years at the tournament but they ran into second-ranked and host Fenwick, who peppered DP with seven second quarter goals en route to a 17-12 victory. Fenwick would go on to win the championship over Illinois defending State Champion Naperville Central. Max Meisenheimer scored three, Adrian Britto and Sole Fratila added two each, with Dan Magrino, Gavin Collins, Brady Kossoff, Max Collingwood and Joshua Chan notching solo goals. That loss put the Panthers in Saturday’s third place game against St. Rita. After falling behind by a goal in the opening quarter, DP put three in the cage in the second to take a 4-3 lead at halftime but the Mustangs rebounded with two unanswered goals to head into the final quarter up 5-4. DP surged ahead with three straight goals to take a 7-5 lead but a goal by St. Rita with under a minute to play tied the game at 7-7 to send it to overtime. Two questionable exclusions (DP had ten to St. Rita’s five in the game) put the Panthers in the hole again and St. Rita was able to take advantage as they scored the game-winner two minutes into the period. Adrian Britto and Max Meisenheimer each scored two goals with Gavin Collins, Dan Magrino and James Sweet completing the scoring. Gabe Madej had his best showing of the weekend, stopping 14 shots on goal and assisting on three goals as well. DP (17-5) placed fourth among the 16 teams, their highest finish at the tournament. They’ll be back in the pool agianst Apopka, Wednesday, March 27th at Farnsworth.
