Kong delivers in 7th
4/11/2019 9:03:00 PM

Senior Tiare Kong's RBI double with one out in the bottom of the seventh inning lifted Softball to its fourth straight victory last night. Hits were at a premium for the Panthers but DP (15-2) scratched out a 1-0 lead on the visiting Hornets in the fourth when Dejia Benn walked, moved to second on a single by Ailey Schyck and scored on a base hit by Kati Kelly. That lead lasted until the top of the seventh where the Panthers, whose only two losses of the season were due to defensive collapses in the last inning, were nearly haunted by the same curse. With runners on first and second and one out, Bishop Moore hit a sharp ground ball to Tiare Kong at third, who made a valiant effort but couldn't come up with the play, which allowed the Hornets to score the game-tying run. But Kong would get redemption quickly. In the bottom half of the inning, junior Aliyah Headen ripped the first pitch into left field for a base hit and senior Megan Rush dropped down a sacrifice bunt to move Headen into scoring position. Tiare Kong then stepped into the box and smacked a 2-1 pitch deep into the left-center field gap all the way to the fence to bring home Aliyah Headen with the game-winning run. DP managed only four hits and seven total baserunners in a true pitcher's duel. Raychel Trocki went the distance, allowing just three hits and one unearned run while striking out six. The Panthers will wrap up their district series with Boone on the road tonight at 6:00.
