Hannah Schaible leads Dr. Phillips back to the Final Four (2012)

Second half surge powers Panthers
1/11/2013 11:22:00 PM

Top-ranked Women's Basketball took a second quarter snooze but woke up with a 22-2 run to open the third quarter in an 88-64 demolition of 12th-ranked Father Lopez. Hannah Schaible led the Panthers with 26 points, 11 rebounds and four steals as the Panthers improved to 18-3 on the season with their 57th consecutive victory over a Florida team. DP jumped out to a 27-16 lead in the first quarter off the strength of a balanced attack that saw six different players score. But in the second quarter, the Panthers went cold, hitting only three shots from the field as the Green Wave battled back to tie the game at 35-35 by halftime. The third quarter was vintage DP, however. A relentless press led to three steals in four Green Wave possessions. Matea Britvar's three pointer from the top of the key triggered a 14-0 run that saw the Panthers surge to a 20-point lead, 57-37, in a span of 3:34. Sydnei McCaskill, who finished with 19 points and 12 assists, drove in for a layup and a foul and Schaible and Jade Cheek followed up with consecutive treys to turn a first-half nailbiter into a second-half rout. In the fourth quarter, McCaskill hit for 13 of her 19 points, including a deep three from the right corner that pushed the lead to 31 points, 84-53. Arianna Cumbie's bucket in the closing minutes gave the Panthers their school record-tying 88 points, last accomplished in 1992 vs. Colonial. DP will now focus their attention on district foe Cypress Creek next Thursday at home.
