Baseball defeated Boone, 9-3, to earn the 2019 District Championship

Baseball thumps Boone for District title
5/11/2019 8:41:00 AM

Powered by a trio of home runs and 11 hits overall, Dr. Phillips Baseball muscled its way through Boone for a 9-3 victory to capture their first District Championship since 2015 and eighth in program history. DP (20-6) struck first in the second inning when sophomore Noah Sullivan drove a 3-2 pitch deep over the left-center field fence for a solo home run. After Boone countered with a solo shot of their own in the third, the Panthers took control and never ceded. Consecutive singles to lead off the third inning by Jacob Hartman and CJ Cantwell led to Raymond Negron's sacrifice fly that scored Hartman for a 2-1 lead. After a quick pitching change that was effective in getting the red-hot Will Sullivan out, Boone paid dearly for that decision when  junior Brandon Fields belted a two-run home run inside the left field foul pole for his third home run in the last two games. Up 4-1, DP piled on more when Noah Sullivan walked and Diego Garcia ripped a 1-0 pitch into the weeds over the center field fence for his first home run of the year. With the lead now 6-1, Jacob Hartman walked with one out in the fourth and scored on a double by CJ Cantwell to push the lead to 7-1. Will Sullivan stepped in two batters later and stroked a double into left field, his second of the game, to bring home Cantwell for an 8-1 lead, padding Sullivan's single-season doubles record to 13. Earlier in the game, Sullivan shattered the original record of 11 set initially by Kevin Chabot in 1992 and tied by Nick Conti (2015) and Hamzah Nobles (2018). Boone would put runs on the board in the sixth to close the deficit to 8-3 but DP tacked on an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth when Jacob Hartman singled, stole second and scored on a base hit to left by CJ Cantwell. Cantwell finished the day 3-4 with two RBIs and scored twice while Jacob Hartman went 2-2 with a walk and scored three runs. Mitchell Stockwell was solid on the hill for the Panthers, allowing just one earned run over 5 2/3 innings while striking out five. Noah Sullivan allowed one hit and fanned one over the final 1 1/3 innings. DP advances to the Regional Quarterfinal Wednesday at 4:00 pm where they'll host rival Olympia at John Barbati Field.
