Sophomores Yasin Chentouf (13) and Stefan Avram (17)

Ooh Ya Ya!

Down at the District Quarterfinal in Kissimmee, sophomore Yasin (Ya Ya) Chentouf headed in a pair of goals as Men's Soccer silenced host Gateway, 3-0, to advance to Thursday night's semifinal round at West Orange. DP (7-5-4) jumped on the other Panthers in the 20th minute when Juan Obando took full advantage of a poor clearance and blasted a shot across the box into the upper right 90 for a 1-0 lead.  All things considered, that would have been enough but DP kept up their pressure on both ends of the field. Gateway, which had defeated DP earlier in the season (1-0) saw a brilliant chance to equalize go by the wayside when junior goaltender Andres Alvarez made a sensational save on a one-on-one opportunity to preserve the lead. With the clock ticking away towards the half, Matthew Babin passed to Gabriel Mesquita who fed Yasin Chentouf for a perfect header into the back of the net in the 39th minute for a 2-0 lead. In the second half, DP poured on the pressure again and it paid dividends in the 69th minute. Senior Manuel Rodriguez blasted a 40-yard free kick off the post but Ya Ya was in the right place at the right time yet again for the finishing header as the Panthers, who are now unbeaten in ten of their last 11 matches, head into the semifinals with a full head of steam. Once again DP got it done on defense with the back wall of Colin Cleven, Evan Barnes, David DiMauro, Tommy DiMauro, Max Plavcan and Manuel Rodriguez but to discount the play of Andres Alvarez in goal would be criminal. The senior turned away nine shots and recorded his fifth shutout of the season. The Panthers, who fell to West Orange, 2-1, back on December 20th, will get a second crack at the top-seeded Warriors Thursday night at 7:30. The winner will earn an automatic trip to the Regional Tournament as well as a berth in Friday night's District Championship.
