Women's Basketball cruises to Metro crown

Bad luck may come in groups of three and no where is that more evident than having to play Dr. Phillips in Women Basketball. For the third consecutive night, DP faced a ranked opponent and for the third consecutive night, the Panthers made it miserable for them. Hannah Schaible poured in 23 points and pulled down ten rebounds, Matea Britvar pitched in with 18 pints and 11 rebounds and Kyla Allison added 14 points and seven steals to lead the Panthers (22-3) to a 78-40 victory over Olympia on Senior Night. The victory secured the Panthers' third Metro West title in the last four years and increased DP's winning streak against in-state competition to 61 games. As impressive as the margin of victory was, it didn't come easy early on. Olympia (18-3) held a 17-13 lead at the outset of the second quarter before DP went on a 14-0 run to take command. Kyla Allison buried a three pointer with 3:46 left and Hannah Schaible scored 11 of the team's 17 points for a 27-17 lead. Ciara Cumbie, who closed with nine points coupled with exceptional defense, drove the baseline for a layup as time expired in the first half to send DP into the locker room up 30-22. In the third quarter, DP put the game out of reach quickly. Schaible and Sydnei McCaskill rattled home threes from opposite sides of the arc to stretch the lead to 40-29 at the 4:09 mark. Matea Britvar scored ten points in the quarter, including a beautiful bank off the inbound pass as the lead grew to 17 points, 48-31, with 1:37 to go. Kyla Allison put the finishing touch on a 20-1 Panther run with a fall-away jumper at the buzzer for a 60-32 lead heading into the fourth quarter. Britvar picked up where she left off in the third, sinking a short jumper and following up with a rebound and put-back to push the lead to 67-39. Another long three by Kyla Allison and a short banker by I'munique Green instituted the mandatory running clock with 2:43 left. Prior to the game, seniors Arianna Cumbie, Stephanie Ratliff, Hannah Schaible and Sydnei McCaskill were honored on Senior Night for their immense contribution to the program which includes a record of 116-11, three Metro titles, two District Championships, three Regional Championships, three Final Four appearances, two State Championships, a national tournament championship with all four signing college scholarships. That is, without argument, the definition of dominance. With the regular season concluded, the Panthers will look to add more hardware to their team total as the Road to Lakeland starts Wednesday at Boone with the District Semifinal vs. Cypress Creek at 6:00 pm.
