1/26/2013 12:54:00 AM

Senior point guard RaShawn Powell scored a game-high 31 points and picked up eight steals as Men's Basketball drilled visiting Cypress Creek, 71-39, to improve to 16-5 as well as giving head coach Anthony Long his 250th career victory at Dr. Phillips. Powell broke out of the gate on fire sinking consecutive threes, capping a steal with a tomahawk dunk and nailing a three at the buzzer to give the Panthers a 19-7 first quarter lead. The second quarter was equally impressive for DP. Pedro Lalor opened the period with a three pointer from the right corner before Powell accentuated a 9-0 run with a pair of steals into layups. Up 28-13 with 2:21 left in the half, Powell dropped a three from the right edge of the arc and closed out the quarter with the fourth of his five treys for a commanding 36-16 lead. With 5:47 to go in the third quarter, sophomore David Stephen was true on a ten-foot jumper and hit four consecutive free throws as the lead stretched to 48-21. Wilkins Desir's layup and a coast-to-coast layup off the glass by Powell sealed a 10-0 Panther run for a 54-21 at the close of the quarter. In the final period, DP secured the running clock with just over two minutes remaining to pick up their ninth victory in their last ten games. Pedro Lalor and David Stephen finished with eight points each, Wilkins Desir tallied seven and Justin Tucker added five with Stephen, Ladarius Goodman and Randall Lofton pulling down six rebounds apiece. JV Basketball improved to 8-6 with a tough 61-55 victory over Cypress Creek. Ira Warren led the charge with 25 points and Darren Warrington added 12. Freshmen Basketball had no problems with Cypress Creek, registering a 69-35 victory to raise their record to 7-4. Credit Wallace James with 25 points and Kenny Delice with 12. Tonight is a huge Metro West Conference matchup between # 5 DP and the # 6 Apopka Blue Darters for two reasons. A DP victory will put them in the driver's seat for their fourth consecutive conference championship and also give Coach Anthony Long 399 career victories spanning his tenure at Dr. Phillips and Gainesville High Schools. Tripleheader action starts at 4:30 with varsity set to tipoff at 7:30 pm.
