Women's Water Polo blasts Timber Creek
2/27/2013 12:30:00 AM

In a day where every other sport was canceled due to bad weather, Women's Water Polo held out and the wait was well worth it. Junior Allie Magrino scored five goals and assisted on three more to lead a contingent of nine different scorers as the Panthers blasted host Timber Creek, 20-3, to even their record at 1-1. Senior Heather MacNeil and sophomores Rikki Price and Jacqueline James scored three goals apiece during a 17-0 run that stretched deep into the third quarter. In fact, DP built a 9-0 lead in the first quarter alone. Rikki Price started the barrage with a pair of quick goals less than two minutes into the game with Heather MacNeil and Allie Magrino following suit with two goals each to build a 6-0 lead at the 2:13 mark. Jacqueline James got into the mix less than a minute later, slapping a shot into the net off a perfect centering pass from Jillian Goulden. After James notched her second goal 36 seconds later, Goulden picked up a rebound and pushed it back into the right corner with just 14 seconds left. While the second quarter was not as busy as the first, DP managed to extend their lead to 11-0 on two goals by Magrino at 6:02 and again at 5:08. Heather MacNeil fired a dart into the upper right 90 at 4:43 and Meredith Canty closed out the half with a goal into the left corner with just 13 seconds remaining. In the second half, the Panthers came out firing on all cylinders once again. Rikki Price gathered a rebound and sent it in for her third score and 32 seconds later, Allie Magrino took a pass from freshman Destiny Slyster, drew the goalie out of the cage and tossed a perfect lob into the top right corner for her fifth goal of the game to push the lead to 15-0. Slyster followed suit with her first career goal, a cross-cage shot into the left corner just 36 seconds later, and sophomore Emily Kliewer then took a pass from Magrino and blasted one into the top right corner to make it 17-0 with 2:42 left in the third. Timber Creek broke the DP scoring run with a goal but DP quickly counterpunched with a penalty shot goal by Jacqueline James and a perfect toss over the goalie into the left corner by sophomore Megan Hallson. Up 19-1 heading into in the fourth quarter, DP picked up their final score of the night when Destiny Slyster found an opening on the left side of the cage for the 20-3 final.  Marissa Goodrum had another solid night in goal for the Panthers, picking up a pair of saves and assisting on three goals as well. Heather MacNeil added four steals and an assist, Jacqueline James had two assists while Meredith Canty and Allie Magrino notched two steals apiece. The Panthers will travel to Oviedo this afternoon before competing in the Wildcat Invitational Friday and Saturday.
