Senior Ian Perkins (4) vs. Oviedo (2013)

Perkins drives Men's Water Polo past Lake Nona
3/7/2013 1:25:00 AM

Over at the Aquatic Center, senior Ian Perkins played the best game of his DP career, netting five goals to go with sensational defensive play, as Men's Water Polo dispatched visiting Lake Nona, 13-10, to remain undefeated against Central Florida competition. Junior Ian Supra scored four goals, including two critical scores coming in the final 98 seconds of play, and senior Reed Davis notched his sixth hat trick in eight games as the Panthers improved to 7-1. DP struck first at the 5:03 mark with Ian Supra jamming one home off a pass from Reed Davis and after Lake Nona tied the game on a penalty shot, Ian Perkins put the Panthers up a goal off a power play score with 2:50 left in the opening quarter. With just 1:05 left, Davis took a pass in the hole, fought off two defenders and dumped it over the goalie's head for a 3-1 lead. In the second quarter with the game knotted at 3-3, Davis struck gold twice on a pair of power play goals; the second a picture-perfect slow toss over the goaltender's head into the left corner to give DP a 5-4 lead, one they wouldn't relinquish the rest of the way. Ian Perkins gave the Panthers some breathing room before the half, smacking home a one-timer off a rebound with 47 seconds left. While the DP offense was timely, sensational defensive play by Perkins (four steals) and goaltender Nick Lachinski, who registered 12 saves, including a tremendous save with 17 seconds to go in the half, defined the DP effort all night. Up 6-4 in the third quarter, Perkins went top shelf from seven meters out for a 7-4 lead and Ian Supra slammed one home on a fall-away shot into the left corner with 4:32 left. Lake Nona matched the scoring to pull within two, 8-6, but Ian Perkins rammed another shot into the back of the cage at 3:55 to make it 9-6. Just 48 seconds later, Nate Hamner took a quick pass from Reed Davis and one-timed a skip shot into the left corner for a 10-6 lead. Lake Nona amped up the pressure in the final quarter but the Panthers answered every call. With 4:48 left in regulation and a 10-7 DP lead, Ian Perkins capped his career night with pure hustle. After a shot caromed off the crossbar, Perkins out-raced the goaltender and punched the rebound into the cage for an 11-7 lead. Lake Nona halved the deficit quickly with a pair of goals but Ian Supra dropped a shot behind the goal with 1:38 left and followed up 33 seconds later with a perfect toss into the right corner to secure the 13-10 victory. The Panthers will get a slight break until they take on West Orange Monday.
