Freshman Caitlyn Jones (2012)

Softball charges into District lead
3/9/2013 12:28:00 AM

Over to Softball we go where the ladies have put together a three-game winning streak and there's no better time to do it than in district play. DP (6-6) doubled up host Boone, 2-1, and in the process has moved themselves into prime position to lock up the top seed in the upcoming District Tournament. The Panthers spotted Boone a third-inning run but counterpunched in the top of the fourth. Sophomore Caitlyn Jones led off the inning with a double down the third base line and with one out, senior Sarah Lang walked and sophomore Sarah Kollas bounced a single into left field to load the bases. Sophomore Marisa Lagos stepped in and drove in Jones with a fielder's choice to tie the game at 1-1. In the top of the fifth, freshman Donna Ryan got things going again with a line drive single to center, went to second on a sacrifice bunt by freshman Rebekah Boggs and scored the eventual game-winning run on Caitlyn Jones' base hit up the middle. Key to the winning streak has been the sharpening of the Panther defense and nowhere was that more obvious than last night. Boone threatened to tie the game in the bottom of the sixth with two runners on base but the defense slammed the door and silenced the 3-4-5 batters in the seventh to secure the victory. Caitlyn Jones went the distance, scattering six hits and struck out eight for her fourth victory of the season. Next week's battles with Freedom and Cypress Creek loom large as the Panthers can secure the top seed in the District Tournament with victories over both clubs.
