Sydnei McCaskill of # 1 Dr. Phillips (2013)

On the doorstep of immortality
4/6/2013 12:04:00 AM

Sydnei McCaskill caught fire in the second half and finished with 19 points, eight assists and seven rebounds to lead second-seeded Women's Basketball to a 65-58 victory over third-seeded Life Center Academy (New Jersey) in the semifinal of the ESPN National High School Invitational Tournament in Bethesda, Maryland. DP (30-3) drained nine three-pointers and challenged Life Center to do the same by using a stifling defense that took away Life Center's strength inside the paint. The strategy worked. The Panthers led 14-12 after one quarter, were tied at 27-27 at the half and finished the third quarter up by two again, 41-39. In the fourth quarter, DP had more gas left in the tank as evidenced by Life Center sending DP to the line with consistency late in the game. Hannah Schaible, who finished with a double-double (16 points, 11 rebounds), was nearly perfect from the charity stripe, sinking nine of her ten attempts as the Panthers built as much as a 12-point lead midway through the fourth quarter. DP advances to the championship game for the third consecutive year where they'll face Archbishop Spalding (Maryland) in a rematch of the play-in game of 2011 that springboarded the Panthers to the National Championship in their first appearance. Catch all the action live at 11:00 am this morning on ESPN 2.
