Baseball rallies to stun Olympia
4/6/2013 10:25:00 PM

Back here at DP, Baseball celebrated Little League Day at John Barbati Field as the Olympia Titans traveled the 2.9 mile journey to take on the area's hottest team. Wasn't pretty for a while but the Panthers always seem to land on their feet. Olympia plated a pair of runs in the first while the Panthers threatened, but couldn't capitalize, in their first three innings. Still down 2-0 in the bottom of the fourth, Robbie Barrett brought the home crowd to life with a leadoff double into the gap and came home on an RBI single by Ronnie Mitchell to halve the deficit, 2-1. Olympia responded threefold in the top of the fifth, however, to take a 5-1 lead and things looked shaky for the Men in Blue. But in the bottom of the sixth, DP got it rolling.  With one out, Ronnie Mitchell laced a double into the left-center field alley and Zac Holbrook was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second. With Josh Jimenez running for Holbrook at first, Nolan Lang stepped in and drove a single into left field to load the bases for Mike Marinaccio. The senior second basemen worked the count patiently and drew an RBI walk to bring home Mitchell and Nic Strasser followed up with a fielder's choice to bring home Jimenez. DP was in business, down 5-3. With two outs and runners at second and third, senior Mike Flaherty drilled a two-run single into left field to score both Lang and Marinaccio and just like that, the game was knotted up, 5-5. In the top of the seventh, Olympia was poised to regain the lead, loading the bases with two outs, but sophomore Kyle Marman came on in relief and forced a lineout to first to douse the fire. After DP went quietly in the seventh, Marman took the mound again in the top of the eighth and Olympia threatened one more time. With a runner on first and one out, however, a line drive to short was nabbed by Nic Strasser for the out and he fired over to first to double up the runner to end the inning. The Panthers wasted no time getting going in the bottom of the eighth. Leadoff batter Nolan Lang drove a single up the middle, Mike Marinaccio dropped down a perfect sacrifice bunt but the throw to first was dropped, putting runners on first and second with nobody out. Nic Strasser stepped in and laid down another perfect bunt to move the runners to second and third. With one out, Mike Flaherty was walked intentionally to load the bases and in stepped Ryan Larson, who hit a rocket to deep center field that was caught, but Nolan Lang tagged up from third and came home with the game-winning run, 6-5. Adam Polansky got the start for the Panthers (17-3) and pitched four solid innings. Kyle Marman pitched one and a third innings and picked up the victory in relief of Jakob Probst and Mitchell Rutherford. Nolan Lang finished with three singles and two runs scored while Ronnie Mitchell (single, double, walk, RBI, run), Mike Flaherty (single, two walks, two stolen bases, two RBIs) and Nic Strasser (two singles, RBI) also fueled the offense. DP has now won five in a row and 14 of their last 15 games. They'll head up to DeLand Monday.
