Jade Cheek fires a three against West Orange (2013)

Streak halted by Edgewater
11/21/2013 8:19:00 AM

Women's Basketball went toe-to-toe with top-ranked Edgewater for the first half but turnovers and limited offensive execution doomed DP in the second half in a 51-23 loss. Down 11-7 in the second quarter, Jade Cheek and Katrina Reeves buried consecutive threes and a free throw by freshman Tiffany Tolbert put the Panthers up for the first and only time of the game, 14-13, at the 3:48 mark. The wheels fell off the bus shortly after, however, as the Eagles outgunned the Panthers, 38-9, the rest of the way to hand DP their first loss against in-state competition since 2011, a streak that lasted 71 games. They'll get a break to work on some things next week before hosting Miami Country Day next Friday night. JV Basketball had a better experience, however. Down 28-20 at the half, the Panthers roared back to take a 32-30 when Diamond Alford buried a three with 3:44 left in the third quarter. Alford, who finished with a game-high 20 points, struck again from downtown to tie the game at 41-41 with 2:34 left in the game and a driving layup by Phylicia Siplin 29 seconds later gave DP a 43-41 lead. Alford would drain a pair of free throws with just over a minute remaining to seal the 45-44 victory as the Panthers stayed undefeated at 3-0. They'll host Evans December 3rd.
