Jonathan Laurent drives to the rim vs. Olympia (2013)

Men's Hoops takes down Olympia & Dwyer
11/23/2013 11:12:00 PM

While much of Friday night's focus was on Football's playoff game in Tampa, back home in Orlando our Men's Basketball team took care of business with a 62-51 victory over host Olympia to run their record to 2-0 on the season. Junior power forward Jonathan Laurent proved yet again why he's a major Division I prospect with another double-double, pouring in 23 points and ripping down 14 rebounds to go with four steals. The Panthers jumped out to a 16-10 lead after the first quarter but Olympia outgunned DP 20-11 in the second for a 30-27 lead at the half. In the second half, the Panthers reasserted themselves with a seven point advantage in the third quarter and pulled away for the nine-point victory. Senior Ira Warren picked up 12 points and four rebounds; freshman Chaundee Brown added eight points, seven rebounds and three assists and junior Wilkins Desir finished with nine points and six rebounds.

After a strong win over their top rival, Men's Basketball had no time to celebrate as they had to jump right back into action Saturday afternoon against perennial power Palm Beach Gardens Dwyer. A slim one-point advantage (16-15) after the opening quarter grew into as many as a nine-point margin (46-37) after three but the expected surge by Dwyer came in the fourth. With just over a minutes left, Dwyer tied the score at 57-57 before Chaundee Brown buried the game-winning bucket with 20 seconds left for a 59-57 victory. Brown finished with eight points and ten rebounds while Jonathan Laurent registered another double-double with 24 points and ten rebounds. Ira Warren and David Stephen each chipped in eight points with Stephen adding six assists. Wilkins Desir closed out with seven points and six rebounds. DP (3-0) will now head to Wekiva this coming Friday to take on Deltona at 4:00 pm.
