Quick start drives DP past Winter Park
1/17/2014 10:19:00 PM

Jade Cheek buried a trio of three pointers in the first quarter en route to a team-high 15 points as Women's Basketball notched a 53-42 victory over Winter Park. With the score tied at 7-7, DP went on a 16-0 tear to break the game open. After Cheek knocked down consecutive threes, I'munique Green scored on back-to-back layups and Jah-Nay Anderson added a breakaway layup for a 17-7 lead at the end of the first quarter. The onslaught continued in the second. Tiffany Tolbert hit a a jumper from 16 feet and Anderson followed with a three from the left corner to make it 23-7. Winter Park temporarily stopped the bleeding with a bucket but the Panthers (15-7) kept coming. Ionna McKenzie scored in the lane, was fouled and completed the natural three point play before Jade Cheek's layup off a steal and I'munique Green's 13-foot jumper capped an 8-1 run to close out the half with a 31-10 lead.

Winter Park came out of the locker room with renewed energy, though. The Wildcats (13-6) opened the third quarter with a 10-0 run before Green hit a jumper from the baseline to push the lead back to ten, 33-23, with 3:57 left in the period. The Panthers scored just seven points in the quarter but none were more timely than Tiffany Tolbert's three from the top of the arc with six seconds left that gave the Panthers a 38-25 lead and simultaneously deflated the Wildcats heading into the fourth. Tolbert continued to have the hot hand in the fourth. With 6:33 to go, the freshman drained a three from up top and dropped in a running bank shot down the middle of the lane for a 44-28 lead. Another steal and layup by Jade Cheek and a short jumper off the glass by Ionna McKenzie gave the Panthers their largest lead, 48-28 with 4:24 left and that was more than enough. Cheek finished with 15 points, four steals and four assists; I'munique Green registered 12 points and six rebounds; Tiffany Tolbert added 11 points while Ionna McKenzie and Katrina Reeves ripped down 14 rebounds apiece. The Panthers will travel to Apopka Tuesday before hosting Bishop Moore Wednesday night.
