The Blue Zoo erupts after Stefan Avram's second goal in DP's 3-0 victory over Olympia (2014)

Men's Soccer pounds Olympia in District
1/22/2014 8:30:00 AM

It’s the “win or go home” season for Men’s Soccer and last night at Bill Spoone Stadium, DP sent rival Olympia packing with a dominating 3-0 victory to advance to the District Semifinals. Stefan Avram punched one into the right corner in the 14th minute to put the Panthers on the board first and from there, DP kept up the pressure both offensively and defensively. In the 34th minute, Matthew Babin launched a crossing pass through the box and Stefan Avram brought the home crowd to its feet again, burying a sensational header into the right corner for a 2-0 lead. Olympia tried to claw their way back in the match but DP’s back line of Tommy DiMauro, Jordane Wong, Colin Cleven, David DiMauro and Evan Barnes made life miserable for the Titans, allowing only one clean shot that was turned away brilliantly by goalkeeper Andres Alvarez. In the second half, DP kept pressing and it paid off in the 42nd minute. From the left side, Avram sailed a long pass over the box and senior Colin Cleven charged up from the back and drilled a right foot volley into the back of the net for the final goal of the night. Cleven, Avram and Alvarez each earned Man of the Match honors. With the victory, DP secured its ninth shutout of the season and will now head to Ocoee HS tomorrow night for the District Semifinal with plenty of motivation as the Panthers will look to avenge a late-season loss to Evans and earn the right to advance to the District Championship for the first time since 2006.
